Are you truly living if you’re not seeing and experiencing the world?
I spent the first part of the Thanksgiving week in Jamaica and it was truly an incredible experience. It was my first time taking a trip during a holiday and it was honestly the best decision made. As a family we normally hold off on a large gathering until Christmas so this was the perfect time to take advantage of the days off, low prices and minimal amount of travelers, perfect for an out of the country trip and passport stamp; which I didn’t get.
Flying into Montego Bay (the only airport on the island), we had preset transportation that got us safely but somewhat wildly to our resort – Ocean Coral Spring. Its extremely weird but common to see cars on the opposite side of the road in which we drive here in America. The drive from the airport took about an hour, just because we had other travelers to drop off along the way. With a private driver this would have been around a 30 minute commute especially with the way drivers operate there. The roads are well kept but there aren’t multi lanes like some states here.
The first night was set for settling in from the day of travel and getting food. We chose to start with (yes start) a Malaysian restaurant that served traditional curry inspired dishes. This resort has about 6 restaurants on the property, a few exclusive to premium customers. I did not see an option for this when booking but I would suggest the upgrade if within budget since this also allows access to premium drinks. Of course with COVID restrictions still in place, there was limited availability and seating in some of the places to eat however there was a system with getting on the list of the more popular restaurants on site.
I will say, being from the south (Louisiana) I was not very impressed by the food options and execution. There was room for improvement in terms of flavor. Since we did remain on the resort for the most part, I’m not sure if this was something that would be experienced at the local restaurants. Just to be safe, pack some hot sauce like my girl Beyonce and Tony’s Seasoning.
The resort was gorgeous! Brand new, gorgeous views and access to a private beach. It was a few days spent of relaxing and enjoying the warm weather and a rather seamless experience.
Recommendations for your next trip to Jamaica:
Resort + Local Engement
While I enjoyed the newness of Ocean Coral Springs I would have liked the ability to easily and safely escape the resort for a few hours to explore some. If you’re thinking of visiting and want to do the same, try finding a resort in Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. These two areas have more of a city vibe.
Excursion: Snorkeling!
If you’re traveling to Jamaica an excursion should be top priority. There were plenty to choose from and can be arranged at your resort but we opted for a Canamarn boat ride, up close and personal experience with ocean fish and a landmark visit.
For the first time ever in life I went snorkeling! AND IT WAS AMAZING! Adventurer or not, this is an activity you’ll want to add. We swam out to the coral with snorkel gear and watched the beautiful array of fish pass by. I really got up close and personal with a few but it was truly the experience.
I am so jealous theres access to these kinds of activities we don’t have in Dallas.
Dunnes River Fall
This must see attraction is a tourist favorite and the second biggest highlight of our trip. After snorkeling the second part of our excursion was climbing Dunnes River Fall waterfall on this somewhat secluded beach. It was honestly the most amazing thing to witness. We opted for the dry, self guided tour but the main option includes an assisted walk up the water rushing landmark.
Beef Patties + Goat Curry
Jamaica is known for a lot! Bob Marley, marijuana (no smoking here) and beef patties! This was one thing I could not get enough of during the trip. Once I had a taste I went back for more, they are that good. I consider myself a pretty safe chooser when it comes to the food I eat so if you’re skeptical, don’t be this one is for you.
Another popular dish suggested by the locals to try, If you’re brave enough, is goat curry. This dish is said to be a staple at all gatherings, invites across the land. This actually makes a lot of sense, with the numerous goats you pass grazing on the side of the road.
