Keeping my skin moisturized has become a major priority for me, especially after experiencing around this time last year, a bad reaction due to severe dry skin. The effects were severe enough that I’d actually thought a medical condition was the cause. While an embarrassing realization, it is important not to deny the signs, as severe dry skin symptoms can actually mimic the same as hypothyroidism, diabetes, lymphoma, kidney disease, liver disease, psoriasis, and atopic dermatitis.
One of my most purchased brands when it comes to moisturizing products no matter the area, is Aveeno. The Aveeno system has always been a common staple in my routine, especially when things worsened and I needed to add more hydrating products to combat irritated skin. Since then, I’ve developed a winter routine that works best for my skin.
Dry skin is normal, especially as we age, more sun exposure and less care, however a thorough and consistent routine helps prevent the severe effects and vulnerability. This routine is especially in effect for me during the harsher winter months.
Exfoliate
Removing dead skin is the first step in my winter routine. Getting rid of dead skin allows any product you do put on your skin to penetrate and moisturize rather than sit on the surface and not getting to the renewed skin. Exfoliating occurs right before I cleanse for better results which also helps to unclog pores. Not an Aveeno product but, my preferred product for exfoliating is the Dr Teal’s Restore & Replenish Pink Himalayan Sea Salt Scrub.
Moisturizing Cleanser
Since unlike the summer months we produce a lot less sweat, I’ll typically follow up after my normal cleansing routine with a moisturizing body wash and cooler water temperatures. I do start off with higher heat temperatures but end my shower in a cooler temp as a locking agent. I like using the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Body Wash with Soothing Oat Body Wash. Its A nourishing wash for dry skin and you know its working with its thick consistency.
Post Shower Moisture
My post shower moisture routine is a follow up right after drying off but while still damp, adding another layer of moisture with the Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion for Dry Skin.
Seal With Oil
After applying a moisturizing lotion, I seal with a light oil. This will help to maintain moisture throughout the day as the applied layers have penetrated deep into your pores. You can also use other oils or light serums like almond oil, vitamin e oil or any other stand alone light oil of choice. Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Oil Mist, however, has Oat and Jojoba oil which conditions your dry skin for immediate results. I love that it comes in a convenient spray bottle for transport and easy use.
Sunscreen
The sun may not be shining as bright during this time of year, but its still important to maintain protection. Applying a sunscreen both on your body and face year round reduces damages to skin and appearances of sun damage. Aveeno makes many face moisturizers that come with SPF 50 Sunscreen and also suncreen options specifically for your body. Apply the Aveeno Ultra Calming Daily Face Moisturizer right before your foundation for additional protection. For everywhere else, apply the Aveeno Protect + Hydrate to any exposed areas.
